Guidelines for "Watch and Pray"

Jesus declared the following: Watch therefore, and pray always, that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.’ Luke 21:36

‘Watch therefore for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming’. – Matt.24:42

‘Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is…And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!’ –Mark 13:35,37

Watchman needs inspiration from God and His word:

‘Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear a word from My mouth, and give them warning from Me.’- Ezekiel 3:17

 I will stand my watch and set myself on the rampart, and watch to see what He [the LORD] will say to me…’ Habakkuk 2:1

What do we watch and pray for?

Jesus provided us guidelines on what to watch for in the news in Matthew 24 (also see Luke 21; Mark 13):

1) Verse 4-5, Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name saying , ‘I am Christ’, and will deceived many. (Col. 2:8,18; Luke 21:8; Mark 13:22)

What to look for in the news: World leader’s statements, plans and platforms, economic and political maneuverings. Religious leaders’ actions and pronouncements in the news. Newsworthy aspiring politicians or would be ‘messiahs’ in the news with promises and programs.

2) Verse 6-7a, And you will hear wars and rumors of wars…For nation will rise against nation, and kingdoms against kingdom. (Luke 21:10)

What to look for in the news: Update on news about warfare, wars in the Asia, Europe, Africa, Middle East, etc. Methods and means used in warfare such as chemical, biological, latest smart bombs, etc. Major political upheavals. Watch  Israel, Middle East, Europe, rise of European economic powerhouse/union.

3)Verse 7b, And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. (Luke 21:11,25)

What to look for in the news: Latest outbreak of diseases, food shortages, economic abuses and sabotage. Lack of available jobs, market trends, social issues like poverty, family planning; News about nature and animals going wild, planetary alignments, news about stars and planetary discoveries. Updates on earthquakes, typhoons, latest natural and man-made disasters. Population explosion. Health news, new discoveries in medicines/sciences, battling diseases.

4)Verse 9, They will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. (Luke 21:12-17)

What to look for in the news: Religions persecutions, Christians in danger zones. Laws and policies that oppresses religious assemblies. Anti-religious legislations; news on latest religious apostasies, new doctrines; departure from the truth.

5)Verse 10, Many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. (2 Thess 2:3)

What to look for in the news: Family issues, marriage, divorce, social trends, (internet, gadgets, social media) that numb a person’s attitude/emotions toward others. Homelessness of people; family related deaths and killings.

6)Verse 11, Many false prophets will rise up and deceive many (2 Pet 2:1)

What to look for in the news: New age religions, cults, magic, deceptions about faith, quackery, sorcery, horoscope, etc. Latest religious trends/frenzy about popular and charismatic religious preachers.

7)Verse 12-13, ‘Because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved. (2 Thess. 2:3; 2 Tim 3:1-5)

What to look for in the news: Latest update on the psychological and physiological state of person in the news. Focus on new philosophy about life, theory of evolution, scientific studies refuting God. Latest news on Human rights issues, Rights movements: women, animals,  environmental, and homosexuality. Legislations about divorce, family planning, etc. Positive/inspirational news about Christian overcoming the odds.

8)Verse 14, And this gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 28:19-20; Rom 10:18)

What to look for in the news: News/Update about Churches of God activities of preaching the Gospel. Latest publications, announcements; news and prayer requests from brethren…

Tips on how to deliver the News:

1. Watch and Pray portion is for a maximum of 10 minutes only, so be direct/concise in your delivery.

2. Find the key issues/facts of the news. Do not read the whole article of the story.

3. Provide short insight about the news, but do not read too much of your personal/private opinion on the news.

4. Cite important Bible passages that can provide prophetic insight/ understanding about the news.

5. Avoid news taken from questionable news sources such as conspiracy theories, etc. Do not use vulgar or offensive language taken from the news story.

6. No fancy news about sports, such as basketball, boxing, beauty contest, etc. unless the purpose/intention was for an important lesson to be learned from.

7. End the news in positive note, citing Bible passages and other inspirational thoughts.
