Why Were You Born?

why lifeWhy Were You Born?

Ask the question “Why were you born?” to people on a busy street, and you will probably get a quizzical look in return. This question seems to be the most basic, yet seldom it is being asked or pondered upon.

Despite its scientific and technological advances today, science can only theorized that once, we humans had evolved from a simple, ‘single-celled’ organism to primates before becoming a thinking man. Thus, making man to have no intrinsic value apart from animals.

In contrast, the best of philosophy see the need of man for ‘self-actualization’. In order for man to be of greater value, man should develop himself to becoming a ‘super-man’--a self-actualized being of superior culture and race. This mindset forces man to becoming a survivalist (amoral-‘no right or wrong’) without regard to other ‘weak’ class of society or other races. Also, this kind of idea/philosophy gave rise to a political theory that says ‘the end justifies the means’ (Machiavelli).

Religion on the other hand, cannot offer anything but to console an individual that after death, a person will be assured of a place in ‘heaven’ gazing at the face of God for the rest of his/her 'unspent' life. Others subscribe to a narrowly “feel good” theology that deemphasizes accountability and wrong (sin).

But is the purpose of mankind really that mysterious and hidden?

The Bible reveals that since the beginning, God has not been remiss in reminding mankind for its ultimate purpose--a divine mandate, if you will:

Genesis 1: 26,27-28/NKJV “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in (lit. ‘as’) Our image, according to Our likeness…’”

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply…” (v.27-28)

Out of ‘man’-kind (Heb. adamah, red earth) God created ‘male and female’.  From these two beings (becoming ‘one’ [echad] family), God destined them to be His living symbol (‘image’, Heb. tselem –a figure, or representative). So God placed in mankind this unique role to be God’s very representative of Himself and of His reign (kingdom). This context fits well with the command to reign over all that God has made.

The next call was for mankind becoming in God’s own ‘likeness’ (Heb. root ’damah’-to resemble, liken, model, shape, manner, similitude). It is man’s purpose to develop/imprint the perfect, upright, moral excellence and character of God in himself--becoming, literally, in ‘His likeness’!

So this is the key knowledge that eluded mankind’s purpose, since the ‘Adversary’ (Satan) snatched this understanding from him at Eden after the Fall (Gen.3).

But the good news is, mankind’s fall did not invalidate the destiny and purpose that God has set in the beginning. He provided a ransom, a way to reconcile man back to God and to His plan: His Son, Jesus Christ (John 3:16). As apostle Peter testified,

“Let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Nor is there salvation in any other name, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:10-12).

Some people will find this story very simplistic, but sometimes people just need to clear out, declutter their mind in order to receive the truth and accept God’s revelation. As the Lord Jesus prayed, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.” (Matt. 11:25)

Thus, the awe-inspiring, yet humbling truth is that God is calling everyone to become part of His divine family. Jesus tells us to follow the ways of God “that you may be sons of your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:45). The apostle Paul referred to God the Father as “the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named” (Ephesians 3:14-15). As Jesus intimated, we need to be heading back and calling “Our Father” in heaven (Matthew 6:9). The imparting of God’s gift, the Holy Spirit made possible our becoming His children: “But you received the Spirit of sonship …” (Romans 8:15, NIV).

After Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, he paved the way for man to follow, becoming the ‘Firstborn among many brethren’ (Romans 8:29, Col. 1:15,18), and the ‘First’ of the ‘firstfruits’ (1Cor. 15:20,23; Rom.8:23, James 1:18)

Moreover, Paul revealed that when we received Christ and follow His teachings, we become "children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ" (Romans 8:16–17).

God reiterated through His prophets that He requires nothing from mankind but to raise “godly offspring” which is the very essence of marriage (Malachi 2:15). And this goes us back to the story and purpose of God’s family—the God-kind.

We are called to the family of God, and He is inviting everyone to be part of it, literary becoming His children, in His very image and likeness, growing in the Kingdom of God. He will give human beings immortal, divine life, which we will share with Him for all eternity (Revelation 19:7-8; 21:1-5).

Revelation 1:6 “…and (the Lamb) has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

This is mankind’ calling, purpose and ultimate destiny—and we just need to believe and respond on this awesome invitation!

Revelation 5:10 “And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth."

Revelation 21: 7 “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be His God and he shall be My son.”
