What is the Kingdom of God?

key domWhat Is the Kingdom of God?

When people think of the kingdom of God nowadays they invariably thought it to be something ethereal: some equate it with ‘heaven’ and/or the ‘church’, other thought of it as something that is ‘within’ the hearts of people. But carefully understanding the words of Jesus on the subject will reveal that he was not talking about any of the above preconceived ideas. He was actually referring to a literal kingdom.

Any dictionary will tell you that a ‘kingdom’ is a major territorial unit which has a monarchical form of government with a king or queen as its head. A kingdom consists of four essential components:
[1] a king or head of state;
[2] territory over which to rule;
[3] laws by which to govern; and
[4] subjects over which to rule.

All of the above requirements will be met when Jesus returns to establish His kingdom on this earth.

Notice what the prophets foretold in the Old Testament and their prophecies were validated in the New Testament with the Messiahship of the Lord Jesus as the coming King:

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.” (Isaiah 9:6-7)

------------
“I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed...And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him (Daniel 7:13-14,27).
------------
“And out of his [Christ's] mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS (Revelation 19:15-16).

The angel told His mother Mary: “And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David” (Luke 1:31-32).

When Jesus was asked by Pilate if He was a king, “...Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world. . . ” (John 18:37)

Thus, if we believe the prophets and follow the words of Jesus Christ, then we know that he will return to this earth to claim his throne and establish a literal kingdom—the Kingdom of God!
